There are events happening throughout the day. Scroll all the way through to see all the happenings. Events are sorted by starting time. All-day events are listed at the bottom.

We encourage you to walk or bike to events around town.

Thank you to the Scouts & National Honor Society whose members will be helping with events throughout the day.

9 AM - 11 AM

  • Sportsmen’s Litter Clean up

    Wear sturdy shoes. The group will clean up litter from Palatine Park Rd and Main St.

10 AM - 12 PM

  • Ecosystem in a Bottle

    Best for ages 6 and up. Please pre-register for this class through the Library Website. They'll supply the environmentally friendly materials you need to make and then observe your own ecosystem in a bottle. Take your creation home to observe how soil, plants, and water interact in your terrarium.

    Location: Library Makerspace (enter through the lower parking lot)

  • Parsonage Spring Clean up & Invasive Species Education

    Join the Germantown Garden Club and History Department to clean up the gardens and grounds of the Parsonage. Local Environmental Landscape Designer, Barbara Hughey, will teach about invasive species and their impacts on the local ecosystem. Please wear sturdy shoes and bring hand tools if you have them. Refreshments will be served.

  • Southern Columbia Little League Ball Field Cleanup & Equipment Swap

    Help to clean up litter and spring debris. There will also be an equipment swap! Bring gear your children have outgrown to swap with neighbors for another size or something else entirely. Waste not, want not!

  • Germantown Fire Department Brush Fire Education & Equipment Display

    The first due Engine and Brush truck will be on display for the public with information regarding brush fire awareness, including the importance of the burn ban in Spring.

10 AM - 1 PM

  • Pollinator Seed Planting with the Germantown Farmers’ Market

    Plant seeds that help the creatures that help us all in reused egg cartons. All Supplies will be provided.

  • Jennings-Willets American Legion Post 346 & Proper Flag Retirement

    Accepting used American flags for proper retirement and to keep them out of landfills.

    Location: Palatine Park Pavilion

  • Rain Barrel Sign-Ups

    Come talk to Climate Smart Committee members about using rain barrels at your home or business and order one at our discounted community program.

    Rain Barrels can be attached to your gutters and save rainwater for future use. The barrels offer an alternative water source during droughts, improve residential storm management, and slow pollution runoff. We are working with the Great American Rain Barrel Company to offer interested residents a discounted price.

  • Solarize Germantown

    Community Solar is a program where residents sign up to get electricity generated by solar farms. Columbia County has vetted two companies to work with and negotiated some bonuses such as a $100 credit applied to the first 100 customers' bills and up to a 10% reduction in bills for the next 25 years. If enough people sign up, the town will be eligible for a $5000 grant from NYSERDA. For more information and to sign up, check out the County Website.

  • LWRP Info Booth & Boat Rides

    Local Waterfront Revitalization Committee members will be on hand to discuss and share your idea for the future of our beautiful waterfront. They are currently looking for new members!

    Canoes and life jackets will also be available to take out on the lake.

  • Happy Bean Coffee in the Park

    Happy Bean will be serving coffee and other tasty hot beverages.

    Location: Palatine Park

  • Thrift 2 Fight Used Clothing Sale Popup

    Thrift 2 Fight is using secondhand fashion to fund and amplify the work of local organizations that promote environmental justice. 10% of every clothing sale will be donated to Sweet Freedom Farm, in support of environmental justice.

    Following this event, a rack of clothing will remain at the Laundromat Shop for a month to continue raising funds for this organization.

  • Free Hand Soap Refill Station

    In an effort to encourage less single-use waste, the Germantown Laundromat will be filling reusable containers (up to 16 oz) for free with The Unscented Company’s Hand Soap. Bring your own container to fill, or purchase one in our Shop! Swing inside to check out their new Bulk Refill Station and other spring favorites – gardening tools, gardening books, pollinator seeds, and more!

  • Earth Day Story Hour with Eliza

    Great for ages 3 and up.

    Location: Main Library

  • Park Commission Bike Repair Station

    A bike technician will be on hand for free spring tune-ups! This includes chain and cable lubrication, air in tires, brake adjustments, shift cable & derailleur adjustments, headset adjustment, and wheel truing. The Park Commission is also committing to planting trees and shrubs in the parks this year.

12 PM - 2 PM

  • Fried Dough in the Park

    The Sportsman’s Club will be serving up fried dough in the park. The perfect pitstop on your way between events!

  • "Let's Take A Hike" Backpack Program with Columbia Land Conservancy

    Co-hosted by the Livingston Free Library and Germantown Library. Register through the Library Website.

2:30 PM –4:30 PM

  • Going Gnome Needle Felting Class

    Create your own earth out of wool! Register and purchase a $20 supply kit through the Library Website. Kit includes natural wool batting, felting needles, and everything else you need to create a sweet globe to take home. Wool felting is relaxing and fun!

  • Earth Day Celebration & Art Installation

    Mother-in-Law’s Gallery Space is featuring an art installation created completely of recycled paper materials by New York artist, Susan Hamburger. Hamburger reflects on the intersection of urban and green spaces with hand-sculpted vegetation made from the refuse of the lockdown, and a selection of paintings by Richard Estrin, Anna Ortiz, and Emily Roz.

  • Earth Day Cocktail & Window Display

    Gaskins will be donating 100% of the proceeds of their Ox Eye cocktail to Women's Earth Alliance.

    The Women’s Earth Alliance Sacred Earth Advocacy Network, in partnership with trailblazing indigenous women leaders throughout North America, employs a range of strategies to support the indigenous movement for environmental health and justice.

  • Germantown Lion's Club Recyclable Can & Bottle Drop

    For the next two months, the Lion's club will be working with the county to keep deposit returnables separate from the rest of the recycling. They can fundraise for their excellent work in town while ensuring that these materials get the best chance at the next life. Aluminum cans are one of the most recyclable materials on earth, having almost unlimited new lives if they reach the proper facilities. The Lion's Club will also be helping to distribute new waste guides to ensure everyone is recycling correctly and taking advantage of the new municipal compost pilot program coming this Spring.

  • New Artist Painted Recycling Barrels

    Palatine Park will have public recycling bins for the first time this year! Thank you to the local artists who have lent their talent to this project. Daru Kim, Melora Kuhn, Sasha Pearl, Deborah Cole, Dawn Breeze, and Patty Baker. Germantown Waste Guides will be available explaining the best ways to recycle and use the new compost option at the dump.

  • GEDAC + CSC Writing & Arts Competition

    Entries from the 2nd Annual Competition will be on display in the library. The Germantown Economic Development Committee teamed up with the Climate Smart Communities Committee this year to bring the theme of Climate Adaptation. There are categories for elementary, middle, and high school students. Thank you to the teachers, students, sponsors, and judges for your participation.

  • Earth Day Story Walk

    Self-guided storybook set in nature.

  • Earth Day Lunch Special & Window Display

    To encourage less meat consumption, one of the most powerful tools we have to fight the climate crisis, Otto’s Market will be offering a Vegetarian - Broccoli Reuben special all weekend!

    All proceeds from this special will go to Germantown Park Commission.

    Look out for their special window display as well!

  • Pollinator Garden Planting

    Alder & Co. will be spending the day replanting their container garden with native pollinator species.

    They will also be donating $100 to the Parks Commission for a future pollinator garden.

  • Earth Day Pizza Special

    Palatine Park Pizza is encouraging less meat consumption for Earth Day by offering a Veggie Pizza Special all day with proceeds going to the Germantown Park Commission.
