Farm Partner — Sustainable Germantown

FARM PARTNER APPLICATION

Thank you for your interest in Germantown and Columbia County’s composting future. We are looking to partner with one local farm to start a municipal compost program within the transfer station system. Columbia County will provide 55-gallon bins at the Germantown Convenience Station (“the dump”) and transport the materials gathered to the farm partner’s location. Sustainable Germantown will lend support by promoting the program and educating participants in best practices for compost to ensure good quality materials are gathered.

The program is planned to start small this Spring. It is likely that we will collect just a few pounds per week in the beginning, but we hope to steadily scale up participation. The farm partner would be responsible for regularly meeting the county truck and unloading the materials. The ideal farm partner would be located within Germantown or nearby, have some experience with composting, and be willing to participate in community education.

Do you have equipment to facilitate the composting process?

Would you release liability for trucks to come onto your property?

Are you able to meet trucks on a regular but somewhat flexible schedule?

For liability reasons, county employees are not permitted to assist with unloading materials onto private property. Are you able to physically unload and swap 55 gallon containers of food scraps when they are delivered by the county truck?

Are you willing to participate in or lead compost education both at your facility and in town?

This program will only supply food scraps. Will you have enough brown materials for a healthy compost mix?

When would you be available to start receiving food scraps?
